The deputy PM, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs, made the statement while attending the UN Climate Summit along with about 120 other delegates in New York, the U.S., on Tuesday (local time).
Vietnam has set targets to cut greenhouse gas by 8-10% compared to the level of 2010 and reduce energy consumption per unit of GDP by 1-1.5% per year in the coming time, the Vietnamese official said.
As one of the countries forecast to be most affected by climate change and sea level rise, Vietnam always prioritizes actions that respond to climate change, Deputy PM Minh told the summit.
In order to keep the global temperature rise at below 2 degrees Celsius in this century, all countries in the world must try their best to reach a legally binding global climate framework by 2015, he stressed.
The Vietnamese official also called on all relevant countries to realize their commitments in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol, in which developed countries are expected to offer financial and technological support for developing countries to cope with climate change problems.
