THE LAST WHALERSThree Years in the Far Pacific With a Courageous Tribe and a Vanishing Way of LifeBy Doug Bock Clark Our best bet for slowing down the planetary extinction we have set in motion is to focus on the collective. When we finally realize that we are in this together, that is when we will move away from our insatiable appetite for more. But we have precious few models that illustrate just what it means to know and act together, as…
Participatory land-use planning (PLUP) refers to a bottom-up method of analyzing land and water resources. In its current form, PLUP integrates inputs about climate change and sea level rise to help the community utilize the resources within its vicinities. In utilizing its resources, the community will be able to improve the people’s livelihoods and help them sustain such resources for the benefit of the next generations. This publication in implementing PLUP focused on climate-smart adaptation in Climate-Smart Villages (CSVs).
This manual is intended to provide simple and helpful information, especially to farmers and extension agents, in solving pests and diseases issues on rice production in the context of climate change. The publication tackles: the effects of climate change on agriculture; effects of climatic factors on the development of pests and diseases; and importance of an Early Warning System and the pest-smart interventions and recommendations to alleviate problems due to pests and diseases.
Environmental stress represents the most limiting factor to food productivity. Not only do they impact the crops being cultivated, but they also hinder other agricultural crops from being introduced for production to areas that are not currently being used for agriculture.  One major problem in global agriculture is the significant fluctuations in annual crop yields due to the unpredictable and varying environmental stresses (e.g., drought, flooding, salinity, and high temperature). Accordingly, environmental stresses are often characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of…
This paper intends to provide comprehensive ideas and information about conservation agriculture as a biological engineering approach to sustainable food production in support of rural development in Southeast Asia. The basic principles of conservation agriculture, its advantages and benefits, its evolution, state of adoption in the world and in Southeast Asia, some recent advances in terms of experimental research in Southeast Asia, issues, constraints and challenges to its adoption, prospects for adoption in the region, and some policy implications are…
School gardening has been increasingly popular in the past decade both in developed and developing countries. However, most school gardening projects focus on educational goals and aim to increase school children's knowledge of food systems and their acceptance of vegetable consumption. The School-Plus-Home Gardens Project (S+HGP), a collaboration among the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), and the Department of Education (DepEd) of the Philippines, district…
