Welcome to SEARCA Knowledge Center on Climate Change Adaptation in Agriculture and Natural Resource Management in Southeast Asia (KC3)

Publications

This contains experience notes, adaptation notes, policy briefs, policy papers, technical reports, stories on good practices, and other publications related to climate change adaptation and mitigation in Southeast Asia not just from SEARCA, but also from KC3's partners and other agencies/institutions.

As many communities are not prepared to cope with climate disasters facing them today, an ongoing challenge is to build their resilience. In answer to this challenge, disaster risk reduction (DRR)4 aims to address a comprehensive mix of factors contributing to communities’ vulnerabilities. There are numerous tools and methodologies that have been developed to put this approach into practice...
Unfavorable rice environments are defined as environments where rice production is frequently constrained by abiotic stresses such as drought, submergence, and adverse soil conditions. Most of these conditions are found where rice production is dependent on rain only (rainfed rice), but they also occur in irrigated or partially irrigated systems...
Case studies on responses to too much and too little water in the Hindu Kush Himalayas With increased climate variability increasing the risk of floods and droughts, problems of too much or too little water are affecting the lives and livelihoods of the people in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region. Climate change is expected to exacerbate some of the conditions causing these problems. Although climate change has been discussed endlessly in international fora, very little ground research has been undertaken on its impacts.
Quick information on the climate change impacts on the agriculture sector and its climate vulnerability to help identify risks and priority adaptation responses.
This is a capability enhancement project where agriculture experts from various state universities and colleges (SCUs) in the Philippines were provided with knowledge on climate change and effects on Philippine agricultural systems and were equipped with skills on community-level vulnerability assessment which are requisites for a more relevant role in planning /implementing site-specific adaptation measures for agriculture and the farming communities facing climate change adversities. The project enabled participating SCUs to identify site-specific adaptation measures for agriculture and disseminate information…
For a long time, agriculture has been neglected by climate negotiators and policymakers in charge of defining national climate policies. This is changing, and the links between climate change and agriculture have become more obvious over the last years. Climate finance provides an opportunity to facilitate the adoption of agricultural practices that support climate mitigation and adaptation. This report presents a number of policies and interventions aimed at harnessing climate finance potential to support a transition to more sustainable agriculture for the benefit of several barriers impeding smallholder…
Smallholders have important roles to play in both the prevention of dangerous climate change by reducing net global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and our global ability to adapt to climate change. However, smallholders have largely failed to benefit from international financial mechanisms established as a result of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). We propose that this is due to the design of these mechanisms, which in their current formats are largely inaccessible to smallholder groups. The purpose of this paper, which draws on literature and interviews,…
This document summarizes knowledge and experiences in forest management as a response to climate change, based on a literature review and a survey of forest managers. This is part of an FAO-led process to prepare climate change guidelines for forest managers. It examines climate change impacts on forests and forest managers throughout the world. The document also reviews the main perceived challenges that climate change poses to forests and their managers. It summarizes experiences in preparing for and reacting to climate change in different types of…
With agriculture’s dependence on optimal temperature and water availability, climate change has been and will continue to be a critical factor affecting the productivity of different activities within the sector.
Information for the general public on the impacts of climate change on Singapore, the measures that the Government is taking to address climate change and the practical steps that the public can take to use energy efficiently.
