SEARCA supports the 7th ASEAN Working Group on Social Forestry (AWG-SF) Conference and reports to the 11th AWG-SF Annual Meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand

CHIANG MAI, Thailand. SEARCA, as one of the implementing partners of the ASEAN Working Group on Social Forestry (AWG-SF) and the ASEAN-Swiss Partnership on Social Forestry and Climate Change (ASFCC), supported and participated in the recently concluded 7th AWG-SF Conference held in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 12-14 June 2017. The conference highlights the theme "Social Forestry in Forest Landscape Restoration: Enabling Partnership and Investments for Sustainable Development Goals." More than 200 participants from government, civil society organizations (CSOs), development partners, private sector, and academic institutions in the ASEAN Member States (AMS) took part in the conference. 

SEARCA facilitated the session on "Enabling Application of Tools and Innovative Approaches." Dr. Juan Pulhin, SEARCA's Adjunct Fellow on Climate Change, presented the proposed "ASEAN Multi-sectoral Framework for Climate Change: Agriculture and Forestry Contributing to Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)." Professor U-Primo Rodriguez of UPLB, on the other hand, demonstrated the use of the Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models to analyze the potential biofuel options in agricultural development, food security, and landscape restoration.

Dr. Phyu Phyu Win, SEARCA Travel Grant Awardee, served as moderator and speaker for the session on "Integrating Social Forestry/Community Forestry Enterprises in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Plan of ASEAN: Pathway to Achieving Success." Dr. Win presented her paper on "Promoting Productivity, Technology, and Innovation: Examples of Successful Community Forestry-based Enterprises in Myanmar." Dr. Win highlighted and commended AWG-SF for initiating cross-sectoral collaboration with different ASEAN groups, in particular, the ASEAN Coordinating Committee on MSME (ACCMSME).

SEARCA also participated in the Knowledge Fair during the conference and launched 14 Learning Notes from previously funded projects and the brochure of the AWG-SF Strategic Response Fund (ASRF) under the ASFCC Phase 3.

The 11th AWG-SF Annual Meeting was held on 15-16 June 2017 and attended by AWG-SF Leaders, ASFCC partners, the ASEAN Secretariat representative, and other AMS delegates. Ms. Amy Lecciones, SEARCA-ASRF Regional Program Coordinator, presented the major achievements of ASRF in its pilot phase and the planned activities of the facility under the ASFCC Phase 3. (Xyrus Godfrey B.
