SEARCA Scholar presents thesis result in Japan

Mr. Charlie B. Batin, SEARCA scholar pursuing PhD in Forestry at UPLB, presented his paper titled "Seed Germination, Seedling Performance, and Oil Content of Jatropha curcas L. Fruit Based on Color at Two Different Seasons in Northern Philippines," at the 2018 Asian Conference on Civil, Material, and Environmental Sciences (ACCMES) held in Tokyo, Japan on 10-12 July 2018. Mr. Batin also chaired the session on the presentation of papers by researchers and scientists from educational institutions of Taiwan. 

Mr. Batin is the President of the SEARCA Scholars Association for the Academic Year 2018-2019. He was also a SEARCAscholar when he pursued his MS Forestry degree at UPLB; the paper he presented in the 2018 ACCMESis part of the results of his MS thesis.

searca-scholar-presents-thesis-result-japan-02His study shows that the correlation between fruit colors, germination, and growth performance of Jatropha curcas was significant. The study recommends seeds taken from black colored fruits during the dry season and from dark yellow fruits for the rainy season to achieve better germination and growth. Furthermore, research results show that the wet season is the best time to harvest fruits for better germination and growth, while the best period to collect the fruits of Jatropha curcas for oil production is during the dry season when the fruit turns yellow.

The 2018 ACCMES was organized by the Higher Education Forum (HEF) based in Taiwan and was participated in by scientists, educators, researchers and students in the field of environmental science, forestry and natural resources, civil engineering, and economics and finance, among others. Selected papers from the conference will also be published in an international journal.

Mr. Batin's participation in the conference was partially funded by SEARCA through the Graduate Education and Institutional Development Department as part of its support for the dissemination of scholars' research outputs.
