PARIS, July 8 (Bernama) -- France, a hosting country for the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21/CMP11), has called on all countries involved, for full commitment to combat climate change.

Special Representative for COP 21/CMP11 Laurence Tubiana who is also the French Ambassador for Climate Change Negotiations said at this time, the negotiation of several countries was not moving fast while the others have given good proposals.

"The message we are sending to every government is, give instruction to your negotiator to engage in the negotiation now. We have the next session beginning in September.

"But we have to be optimistic as we know there is much preparations in many countries and still a lot of work to do," she told Malaysian reporters here, who are visiting the country, organized by the French Embassy in Malaysia.

Tubiana said she was also looking forward to visit Malaysia before COP21.

"I know the negotiators from Malaysia very much. Some of them are diplomats and also professors," she added.

Meanwhile, she said they were working hard to get extra commitment from developed countries for the additional climate financing to achieve US$100 billion (RM380 billion) per year to combat climate change.

France will be playing a leading international role to ensure points of view converge and to facilitate the search for consensus by the United Nations, as well as within the European Union, which has a major role in climate negotiations.

The conference from Nov. 30 to Dec. 11 in Paris-Le Bourget site will involve about 40,000 participants in one of the largest climate change conferences.

The aim is to reach, for the first time, a universal, legally binding agreement that will combat climate change effectively and boost the transition towards the resilient, low carbon societies and economies.

It will be a crucial conference, as it needs to achieve a new international agreement on the climate, applicable to all countries, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2oC.
