Record temperatures have been recorded from Pakistan to Vietnam before monsoon rains.

Prolonged periods of heat are expected in a northern hemisphere summer.

Across Asia, the heat tends to build up early, with temperatures peaking before the summer monsoon arrives in June and July.

Extreme heat has been experienced very early this year in parts of South and East Asia.

In recent days, northern Vietnam has experienced temperatures in excess of 40C, with 42.5C being recorded in central Hanoi on June 3.

As nations in the Greater Mekong Subregion suffer a rise in water shortages and salinity intrusion, governments need to cooperate in order to safeguard the livelihood of residents in the river basin and their diverse cultures, speakers at an international workshop on water security risks and narratives in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta said last week.

Ha Thanh Toan, rector of Can Tho University in southern Vietnam, said mutual understanding and the sharing of information among the countries along the Mekong River was critical to reducing potential impacts caused by climate change.

HÀ NỘI – Việt Nam aims to increase the nationwide forest coverage to 42 per cent by the year 2020, and 45 per cent by 2030.
