SINGAPORE: The National Climate Change Secretariat in the Prime Minister's Office will have a new Permanent Secretary from 1 October.

He is Mr Niam Chiang Meng, who is also the Permanent Secretary in the National Population and Talent Division.

The Secretariat's current Permanent Secretary, Tan Yong Soon, will retire from the Administrative Service on 1 October after 35 years of service in the public sector.

The Public Service Division says Mr Tan has been instrumental in developing Singapore's strategy and strengthening the national climate change structure and capabilities to meet the challenges in this area.

He was also the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources (MEWR).

Under his leadership, MEWR implemented strategies and programmes. These included the opening of Singapore's first desalination plant in 2005, development of NEWater plants, opening of the Marina Barrage in 2008, and the launch of the annual Singapore International Water Week in 2008.
