In a taped audio speech from Burma, also called Myanmar, she called for environmental responsibility, saying, "I would like to request those who have invested or who are thinking of investing in Burma to put a premium on respect for the law, on environmental and social factors, on the rights of workers, on job creation and on the promotion of technological skills.

YANGON (Xinhua) - An ASEAN-Japan Transport Partnership (AJTP) conference will be launched in Myanmar's Yangon for the first time this month, aimed at preventing the natural environment from being affected by transport system, the local Biweekly Eleven News reported Thursday.

A tropical cyclone has hit Burma's Arakan State and has been upgraded to a “Category II” cyclone, Myanmar Climate Change Watch has said.

Cyclone Giri, which formed over the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean, has reached a “very destructive stage” with winds of up to 120 km per hour, and is due to hit Kyaukphyu, a major town in Arakan State, by 3 p.m. local time.
