A training course on Economic Analysis of Adaptation Options for Local Government Units (LGUs) and an Information Dissemination Forum for Selected Municipalities in the province of Laguna, Philippines were conducted by SEARCA on 16-18 April 2012 in Bayview Park Hotel, Manila.

The two activities were conducted as part of the Philippine component of the three-year project entitled “Building Capacity to Adapt to Climate Change for Selected Southeast Asian Countries,” which is implemented by SEARCA and funded by the Economy and Environment Program for Southeast Asia (EEPSEA) of theInternational Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada.

Thirty climate change adaptation enthusiasts from the academe, local government units, and national research institutions in the Philippines, including representatives from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the Philippine Climate Change Commission, gather to discuss current researches, development initiatives, available technologies, and practices in climate change adaptation in agroecosystems.

Dr. Gil C. Saguiguit, Jr. (left, seated), SEARCA Director, and Dr. Young Han Kwon, Director of Korea Adaptation Center for Climate Change (KACCC), sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to cooperate in research and capacity development projects on 14 December 2011 at SEARCA. The MOU signing is witnessed by Ms. Susan V. Fernandez, Head of SEARCA’s Management Services Unit, and Dr. Huicheul Jung, KACCC Research Fellow.

SEARCA and the Korea Adaptation Center for Climate Change (KACCC)have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to cooperate in research and capacity development projects.

Signatories to the MOU were Dr. Gil C. Saguiguit, Jr., SEARCA Director, and Dr. Young Han Kwon, KACCC Director. Witnesses were Ms. Susan V. Fernandez, Head of SEARCA’s Management Services Unit, and Dr. Huicheul Jung, KACCC Research Fellow. The five-year agreement was signed on 14 December 2011 at SEARCA.

KACCC was established by the Korean Ministry of Environment at the Korea Environment Institute to enhance its ability to develop climate change adaptation strategies.

SEARCA, with the SEAMEO Regional Open Learning Centre (SEAMOLEC) and the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF), opened the second offering of the Online Course on Responding to Climate Risks in Agriculture and Natural Resource Management last 16 October.

The eight-week online course attracted 11 participants from Kenya, Zimbabwe, Timor Leste, Lao PDR and the Philippines. They represent various local, national, sub-regional and international government and non-government organizations in their respective countries. Its first offering had 20 participants from the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia and Italy who came from a wide range of academic, local and international government and non-government institutions.

SEARCA and the Indonesia-based Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology (BIOTROP) jointly organized the “Seminar-Workshop on the State of the Art of Climate Change Adaptation in Southeast Asia: Focus on Indonesian Agriculture Sector” held in Kuta Paradiso Hotel, Bali, Indonesia on 17 October 2011.

The Indonesian government through its Ministry of National Education hosted the seminar-workshop, which convened policymakers, academics, representatives of industry, development organizations, and farmers’ organizations working in climate change or related fields.
